Day 6: Blue Mountains

Today we got up at 5:30 to catch a train out to Katoomba, about two hours inland of Sydney. Katoomba was an interesting mountain village filled with backpackers and sightseers. We found our way to Echo Point which has a phenomenal outlook over the mountains and of the Three Sisters rock formation. We found our way to the Giant Stairway, which is exactly as advertised. 900 steps almost straight down the side of a cliff. My legs had turned to jelly by the time we reached the bottom, so I basically just held the handrails and let myself kind of fall down the last few segments. After we hiked around for a few more hours at the bottom, where we encountered some massive trees not much unlike the California Redwoods, we gladly grabbed a "train" back to the top to prevent a return trip up the Giant Stairway. I hesitate to really call it a train because it was basically a Disney ride cable car whose climb easily exceeded a 45 degree angle. We essentially got hauled up a ladder on the side of a mountain sitting in a caged rail car. However, views were spectacular from nearly every part of the park we explored, and I would highly recommend a trip to the Blue Mountains for anyone looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of Sydney for a day.

One heck of a place to rock climb

900 steps of this...

This really does no justice to the incline of this train
